Guidelines for article submission to NN&I
These
guidelines are required to achieve accurate and efficient handling of
technical material; however, individuals desiring to contribute to NNI
or NephrologyNews.com should not hesitate to make inquiries, even if they are
unfamiliar with procedures for writing and submitting manuscripts. Our
editorial staff will be happy to process and to reply to any queries
received, as well as to advise authors in the preparation of material.
Contributors
Our
goal is to provide a forum for the exchange of professional
perspectives on all political, economic, social, scientific, and
technical developments in renal care; to write and publish with absolute
integrity; and to serve the needs of individuals involved in renal
care. NN&I and NephrologyNews.com encourage submission of manuscripts by
readers on topics related to new renal care developments, whether they
are political, economic, social, scientific, or technical. In a
submission letter, manuscripts indicate one of the following editorial
types:
1. Editorial comment or opinion on current issues
2. Practice management strategies
3. Blogs
4. Clinical report on application of new technology or technique
5. Professional presentation from seminar, symposia, or scientific meeting
6. Letter to the Editor
Exclusivity
Articles
are accepted for publication on the condition that they are contributed
solely to NN&I. Authors should secure all necessary clearances and
approvals prior to submission. All manuscripts are peer-reviewed (in a
double-blind review). Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged
immediately and every effort will be made to advise contributors of the
status of their submissions within 60 days.
Note: A letter should
accompany each submitted manuscript transferring copyright ownership
with language similar to the following example:
In compliance
with the Copyright Revision Act of 1976, effective January 1, 1978, the
undersigned author(s) transfers all copyright ownership of the
manuscript entitled:
__________________________________________________________
to Nephrology News & Issues in the event the material is published.
Submissions
Manuscripts
must be computer printed. Electronic submission is encouraged. Please
submit the original document as a Microsoft Word file (1997-2003
version) via e-mail to mneumann@nephrologynews.com, and mail one hard copy to
ensure no format features are lost during electronic file transfer.
Titles
NN&I
reserves the right to select a title, or headline, that is consistent
with established editorial and production requirements; however, in most
cases the title used will be the one supplied by the author. Therefore,
care in the choice of a title should be given to accurately and
concisely describe the content and significance of the manuscript.
Format
Each
author’s full name, professional title, and affiliation must be noted
on the first or title page in precisely the form this information is to
be published. For multiple authors, please designate one author as the
contact and include her or his complete street address, telephone
number, e-mail address, and fax number in the cover letter. Please
include a short biography (25-50 words) of all authors. A color or
black-and-white glossy photograph of each author is encouraged,
preferably scanned in a high-res (300 DPI) JPEG/TIFF file and submitted
electronically.
Word count, abstract, author bios
Please
include the word count of the article in the top left hand corner of
the first page of the manuscript. Beneath the word count, please provide
an abstract of approximately 125 words should follow the title page,
covering the main points so that the reader may readily obtain the gist
of the article.
Font
Text
format should be in 11 pt. Times New Roman PS. If you do not have the
PostScript font, Times New Roman is the next best choice.
Art, photos, graphics
Illustrations,
charts, graphs, diagrams and tables must be clear and distinct,
submitted unfolded and suitable for direct reproduction. If sent as
electronic files, they should be separated from the article file(s) and
each should be accompanied by a hard copy. Images are accepted in the
following electronic formats: TIFF, EPS, and JPEG, preferably created in
Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. If images or photos are scanned,
they must have a minimum resolution of 300 DPI. Otherwise, please send
originals.
Photo captions
Captions
should be typed separately and attached to the associated material and
should not exceed 40 words in length. Please include all pertinent
information for the caption (people’s names, date of photo, specific
location, relevance of photo to story). Exact placement of this material
in the text must be clearly noted. In electronic submissions, please do
NOT include text in the graphic, but provide text separately.
References
When
references are referred to within the text of the article, they should
be numbered and set in superscript style (i.e., style3). Please number
each reference individually. Do not use MS Word’s automatic numbering
feature. Please alphabetize general references—not directly referred to
in the body of the text—at the end of an article. Please list references
in the following manner:
