Beth Piraino, MD, of Pittsburgh, has been appointed president of the National Kidney Foundation. She is currently a tenured Professor of medicine and associate dean of admissions and financial aid at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Piraino earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and conducted her training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She is recognized as a fellow of the National Kidney Foundation for her service to the foundation on local and national levels.
"So many people are at risk for or have kidney disease but are not aware of this," says Piraino. "During my term as president, I want to focus on community outreach to bring awareness to the population about the impact kidney disease has on people's lives, and what can be done to combat this growing problem."
Piraino said she plans to pursue these goals by building on established National Kidney Foundation educational efforts and advancing them. She said she will be working on NKF's nationwide awareness campaign targeted at those at highest risk for developing kidney disease and the primary care providers who diagnose and treat these patients. "By forming collaborative partnerships with healthcare providers and educating patients and professionals on early recognition of kidney disease and appropriate intervention, it's possible to slow or reverse kidney disease and improve patient outcomes," she said.
In her own practice, Piraino said she has a passion for patient-centered care. "I believe that empowering patients to take an active role in their healthcare treatment, even in the face of a serious illness, results in positive outcomes. This perspective will shape my approach to my work with the NKF, an organization that has always positioned patients as the most important member of the healthcare team."
In addition to her membership with the National Kidney Foundation, Piraino is also an active member of the American Society of Nephrology, International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis, International Society of Nephrology and Women in Nephrology. Piraino is listed annually in The Best Doctors in America.
