The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation and the International Society of Nephrology are now accepting nominations for the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for the Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 1, 2012. The prize of $50,000 will be presented at the World Congress of Nephrology in Hong Kong in June 2013.
The prize was established by the PKD Foundation and the International Society of Nephrology from a donation made by Thomas Kaplan of New York in memory of his mother Lillian Jean Kaplan who was a PKD sufferer and died in 2002. The long term goal of the prize is to stimulate members of the scientific and medical community throughout the world to increase begin research that will lead to a treatment and cure for PKD. The prize recognizes individuals whose scientific work constitutes tangible achievement toward improving knowledge and treatment of PKD. The prize is awarded every two years at the ISN’s World Congress of Nephrology.
A complete nomination must include the following information:
1. The full name and complete contact information for the nominee(s).
2. A formal letter of nomination which contains:
i. a statement whether the award should be made to an individual or whether it should/
could be shared with other scientists who may or may not be included in the nomination;
ii. a summary of the contributions of the nominee(s)
iii. a description of how and why the work of the nominee(s) represents a major advance in basic or clinical understanding of PKD, distinguishing those aspects of the work of which clearly set it apart from the work of others in the field.
3. A full curriculum vitae and bibliography for the nominee(s).
4. At least two letters of support for the nomination.
5. The full name and complete contact information for the nominator(s).
