Suspect in murder of former Arizona Kidney Foundation director had been released weeks before

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office in Arizona has confirmed that the man suspected of murdering former Arizona Kidney Foundation executive director Glenna Shapiro and her husband Lawrence had been jailed in December on suspicion of other crimes but was released due to a lack of evidence.

The suspect, Michael Crane, has been arrested along with four others by police in the town of Paradise Valley in connection with the murder of the Shapiros. Both were found dead, their bodies bound and severely burned, in their home on Jan. 30.

Police believe the suspects are also tied to the murder of a man who lived in Phoenix who was found shot and burned in his home just days before the Shapiro murders.  In both cases, the suspects were looking for money to buy drugs, police said.

The Shapiro family held a memorial service Wednesday for the couple. Hundreds of people packed the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix to hear about the Shapiro's lives and their philanthropic work. The family has set up website to honor the couple.
