The American Kidney Fund celebrated its fifth annual national gala, The Hope Affair, Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C. This year’s event, themed “Lighting the Way,” was emceed by FOX 5 news anchor Shawn Yancy.
The American Kidney Fund recognized the following four individuals at The Hope Affair:
- NeShell Monroe, Houston, Hero of Hope Award: Monroe has been a dialysis patient for more than 30 years and a longtime community advocate for kidney disease awareness.
- Joseph A. Chazan, MD, and Lucille M. Pono, RN, Providence, R.I, Caregivers of the Year Award: Chazan and Pono have worked together for four decades to provide care to dialysis patients.
- Jonathan Rivera Gomez, 15, winner of the annual art contest for children with kidney disease: Gomez is a dialysis patient from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and was honored for his winning entry.
“The Hope Affair shines a light on patients and caregivers who are making a difference in the fight against kidney disease, and we are grateful to our many supporters who make this event possible,” said LaVarne A. Burton, president and chief executive officer of the American Kidney Fund.
