Staff at a DaVita clinic in Birmingham kept their cool and started patients on their early morning treatments on Dec. 23 even after a semi-tractor trailer crashed into the back entrance of the facility.

The driver of the rig lose control about 5:20 am after hitting a sheriff deputy’s police car, then plowed into the concrete porch of the dialysis facility, located at 3rd Avenue South at 22nd Street. The truck just barely avoided hitting two load-bearing support columns for the building.

There were three staff members in the clinic at the time of the crash, and patients had just begun to arrive for the early morning shift. No one was hurt.

The staff continued the dialysis treatments for the 18 patients on the first shift, did a second shift, and even a nocturnal session before the truck was later extracted from the crash scene.
